Anneli Kristiina Haataja

Born in Finland, I have travelled and lived abroad for much of my life, making Lethbridge, Alberta my home in 2009.
Painting came to me a few years ago; somewhat haphazardly and I fell into it head first and have never looked back. As a young girl, I drew horses a lot, but only because I loved them so much, not having any idea that I could pursue art in any manner. I just loved to draw whatever I loved. I didn't really start painting until a few years ago and since, have found that the best thing to do is just to keep painting every day.

Although I have not had any formal training, I am constantly learning and absorbing by studying other artists, attending workshops or reading as much as I can about drawing and painting; the “successes” and “what-not-to-dos” of talented artists.
As outgoing as I am, interestingly enough I love solitude when painting. I have my very first art studio in my house where time ceases to exist and I can explore, learn and paint at my leisure. I am motivated by whatever takes my fancy and moves my spirit.  It’s simple really. I don't want to make art difficult, which I can easily do if I think too much. I just want it to flow freely from my soul, see what comes out, and always try to improve and learn from each painting.  I have just recently developed a major crush on oil pastels and hence, have only a few pieces to show. It is quickly becoming my favorite medium and I will have more to display as time passes!

Painting to me is a release of my spirit. Sometimes it comes out tentatively, unsure of where and what to do, and sometimes it is unleashed full force and I am amazed.
