Gail Higginbotham
My background in art began at
the Maryland Institute College of Art in 1970. Then some ten years later,
enrolled in various art classes (ceramics, etching, oil painting) at Anne
Arundel Community College. Currently, I am studying with local artists and a
member of the Drawing and Painting Cooperative at the Maryland Hall for the
Creative Arts. Recently, I have accepted as an accredited member of the
Maryland Society of Portrait Painters.
My
paintings been exhibited throughout the state of Maryland including galleries in
Baltimore (Light Street Gallery, Hoffberger Galley, and Fells Point Art Gallery
). In my local area, I have exhibited at the Mitchell Gallery at St. John's
College, Quiet Water's Art Gallery, Maryland Federation or Art, Montpelier
Mansion, Galesville River Gallery and at the Gallery 333 where I am a co
Director. My first solo endeavor included scenic views from nature in an
exhibit at the Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in 2006.
Awards include an Honorable
Mention in the 2003 Mid Atlantic Self Portrait Show and Juror's Choice in the
2005 Maryland Federation of Art Winter Juried Show. On a national level I was
accepted in the 2005 American Landscape Exhibit at the Maryland Federation of
Art and 2006 Fait Lux, Anne Arundel Community College, Arnold, Maryland.
My paintings are a personal
interpretation of what surrounds me. I strive to simplify the subject matter as
I paint from life or from my digital photos. After exploring various artistic
endeavors and mediums, I prefer oils and oil pastels. In my experience, oil
pastels have a vibrancy and texture like to other medium and I enjoy exploring
their painting possibilities.
