As all of you know, January is the month designated for paying dues to
the Oil Pastel Society. This year we are excited to announce that a
Member's Only Show, "Beginnings", will be offered to all members who have
their dues up-to-date. Your dues will cover your entry fee for this show
and assure that you are featured with a gallery page on the website!
We will also be able to do some advertising in major art magazines to
promote oil pastels and the Society. And of course, we'll be able to
improve our site with a lot more features for our artists who keep their
memberships current. Your staff is dedicated to making the Oil Pastel
Society the very best resource for oil pastellists in the New Year!
We are also pleased to announce that Terry Ludwig will be serving as
our judge for "Beginnings". Terry is well-known for his landscape and
figures workshops. He also manufactures his own line of handmade soft
pastels. If you'd like to see his work, please check out his website,
www.terryludwig.com
2004 has been an exciting year for the Oil Pastel Society. If you
haven't seen the newest Pastel Journal, please take a look at the listings
for Pastel Societies in the Feb. 2005 issue...and don't miss the editorial
letters from Holbein, Sennelier, Savoir-Faire, Katherine Simmons, and Sue
Choppers-Wife. It was really exciting to see that the Oil Pastel Society
was able to contribute to correcting misconceptions which the Pastel
Journal staff held regarding oil pastels!
Happy New Year Everyone!!

Marble/gesso coated surfaces or Sue's Famous Marble/Gesso
Recipe
By Sue Choppers-Wife
May be
used on canvas, masonite, matboard and any paper that can be wetted.
1 cup
gesso
1 cup water
1-2 tablespoons
marble dust
pigment optional for toning
Mix well. Apply 3 coats with
a foam brush (available at hardware/paint stores). Allow each coat to dry
before applying the next coat in the opposite direction of the previous
layer, you can use a hair dryer to speed the process. This can be sanded but
does not need it as the surface dries evenly. May use solvents, can be
erased.

Artist of the Month - Theresa Evans
I
have been driven to paint and draw all my life and in all media. However, I
must admit to being hooked on pastels as soon as I tried them. The immediacy
of colour in a stick really suits my quick intuitive way of painting.
Opening a new box of pastels is akin to diving into a box of irresistible
candies of all hues and flavours!
I think
that colour has to be the first thing that motivates me to create. A close
second is light and especially the way it describes form and enhances
texture and colour in nature. I love the landscape sculpted by low light.
Tuscany is my favourite place to paint; the light there is amazing. I never
fail to be inspired by the simplicity of a field of golden or green grasses
lit by low morning or evening sunlight. Creating these luscious textures
with pastel is very absorbing and exciting.
I love the art of the Impressionists, in particular Degas and
Monet. I am also inspired by Georgia O’Keefe, Gustav Klimt and Vincent Van
Gogh. However, the artist who has inspired me most is the pastellist Debra
Manifold, who unfortunately died quite young a couple years ago. Her work is
so vibrant and full of energy. At the time, she was one of the very few
artists working regularly in oil pastels and her informative articles in the
art magazines encouraged a very experimental approach. Her work is in many
collections and at the
Linda
Blackstone Gallery in the UK.
I am a trained art teacher and taught in Manchester schools
before becoming a full time artist a few years ago. I have participated in
many group exhibitions and had my first solo in 2004 at Buxton Art Gallery
and Museum. Plans for 2005 include participating in the ‘Cream of Tameside’
Exhibition for January and February, teaching a programme of oil pastel
classes, amassing a body of work for an Italian Landscape solo and
developing my online gallery site for artists,
Paint Impressions. Better get an early night!
