Tips and Techniques:

Wax Resist
By Kathryn Wilson

Oil pastels are a very versatile medium, so I invite you to try something different – and it’s very simple to do.

Because oil pastels have wax in their formula, you can use these for a “wax resist” technique – wax resist, in simple terms, will repel any liquid that is placed on top. A simple test would be to take a wax candle, rub it on a piece of paper and see how the liquid skips across the paper, or forms a puddle or dot of liquid on top of the wax.

To experiment, take an oil pastel and cover a square with color – then take watercolor and see what it does – if you put the oil pastel on with light strokes and leave a bit of the paper showing, the watercolor will settle into those sections that have no oil pastel. If you want the watercolor/ink to float on the top, cover all of your paper with oil pastels solidly. If you want to achieve a color texture to your final painting, try doing a wash of watercolor or permanent ink over all of the painting, then mopping up the extra watercolor/ink where you want less of the color on the surface. You will see that it forms small specks of color, and it can be controlled by mopping or tilting the paper.

In the example I am showing, I worked the whole painting with oil pastel and then floated a very dark blue permanent ink over the top. You can see where it gave the whole painting a unifying effect with texture and color.

Try experimenting with your oil pastels on different surfaces – glass, wood, pottery – I think the possibilities are endless.
