Featured Artist of the Month – Marie T Harris

Marie works in both abstract and representational art.   She has found that abstract art has helped her to better see her representational art.

Oil Pastel Primer

Ann Tucker is compiling an extensive list of information for us about the oil pastel medium, for beginners especially.   With each article new ideas, helpful hints, etc., will be added to this page.

A Tip on Creating Fine Detail

By Sarah Theophilus

It's lovely having the OPS site to refer students to who enquire about OPs, as there were so few places on the internet before. It gives me great pleasure to see more and more serious artists trying them, they're such a fabulous medium.

I work in relatively small sizes under 12” x 16”. The concentration of creating detail in this dimension, I must admit, does sometimes do my head in. But it's a challenge, and that I enjoy.

The firmer Holbeins help to a certain degree for finer lines, but I find I use mostly blenders and shapers for the finest details.

I added a new page on oil pastel techniques to my web site a little while ago. It's not much yet, but hopefully as time goes on I'll be able to add more information and tips.

Editor’s note: There are several very useful tips on the page at her website.

Charter Meeting of the New Chicago Chapter

by Ann Tucker

“Kate at Daytona Beach” by Carol Zack

The new OPS-Chicago Chapter had its Charter meeting this month.

I sent out an email to all OPS members in the Chicago area. There were about 8 of us interested setting up a group. We traded email (by hitting “reply all” so everyone could see responses). Schedules did not allow for all of us to meet. However we were able to set up an initial meeting with a few of the members.

Carol Zack, Maureen McKee and I met over lunch to discuss art, oil pastels and forming a chapter. It was a great time. We each brought photos of our work. It was fun to see the different styles.

  “Cheerful Lemons” by Maureen McKee

We decided that we want to meet once every 3-4 months. For our next meeting we will do a Plein Air painting event on Saturday, May 20th with a rain date of Saturday, June 3rd.   We’re looking forward to painting together outside. If you plan to be in the Chicago area, please plan to join us!

Also, to keep in touch and share information, we have a blog  that all members of this chapter can post to it.

If you would like to be a member of this chapter, please visit the blog or contact me at ann@oilpastelsociety.com
